Confederation of African Football (CAF) - Cameroonian Issa Hayatou was unanimously re-elected on Sunday president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for a new term that runs until 2017.
The Cameroonian was given a seventh term of office on Sunday during the Confederation of African Football’s congress in Marrakech, Morocco Caf incumbent president Issa Hayatou obtained a standing ovation re-election on Sunday during the body’s congress in the Moroccan city of Marrakech.
He was the only candidate on list after the election commission disqualified main challenger Jacques Anouma, a former president of Cote D’Ivoire football federation.
The 66-year-old Cameroonian was handed a seventh consecutive term in office, although he had vowed to step down by the end of the new four-year mandate.
He called to fight against bad attitudes against Caf, notably when people put all the blames on the body each time a referee fails to fulfil his duties on the pitch.
Elections to the Executive Committee were also held, with Mali’s Amadou Diakite, who was banned for two years in November 2010 by Fifa after being found guilty of bribery, retaining his place after an overwhelming win.
Benin Football Federation chairman Moucharafou Anjorin, who spent six months in jail in Cotonou following allegations of embezzling sponsorship money, defeated Nigerian Football Federation president Aminu Maigari in a runoff for one of the West African berths.
Caf vice president Suketu Patel from Seychelles was also re-elected to the committee from the southern African zone while the other seat from the region went to Ahmad of Madagascar, who beat South African Danny Jordaan in a runoff.
Caf’s next congress will be held in Brazil on the eve of the 2014 World Cup but there will be no elections until 2015.
